Out of all the interviews I have completed, Mr. Farrell's seemed to be the greatest embodiment of the passion the JMU staff shares with everyone they meet. Locally raised, Joey shared with me his connection with food and service that originated from his grandmother's comfort cooking. Our conversation ventured into the extent to which he attempts to offer new ideas and tasty creations with every restaurant or building he works in. A natural leader, Mr. Farrell prides himself on his approachable nature and ability to understand the needs of every person that works under him. Even with his administrative
title, he still seems to feel a personal attachment to every piece of peanut-butter pie that is served out of a station he is in-charge of.
My closing remarks with him revealed a slightly different request than the others for the students to take into consideration; Joey wants the Dukes to venture off and go exploring. With the local wisdom of actually being born on grounds which are now part of our campus, he knows a thing or two about the area. All in all, he provided me with an insight into the goals of our food services, and his personal focus on creating the next meal to become as big as "buffalo mash," or the bread pudding. The next time you walk into Bistro 1908, take a look around and realize that Joey played an integral part in creating the atmosphere and overall deliciousness of our university's food.
